The letters of Matthew Arnold

This collection represents a scholarly effort to consolidate the private correspondence of Matthew Arnold, the influential Victorian poet, essayist, and cultural critic. Published by the University of Virginia Press as part of the Collected Prose of Matthew Arnold series, the project sought to provide a definitive, annotated record of Arnold's life beyond his public literary persona. The editorial work involved meticulous archival research, aiming to bridge the gap between his published aesthetic theories and his personal reflections on education, religion, and social change.

The design and production of this volume adhere to academic standards, prioritizing readability and comprehensive indexing to assist researchers in navigating Arnold's dense social and professional networks. The publication was received by the academic community as an essential resource for Victorian studies, noted for its rigor in contextualizing Arnold's letters within the broader historical and intellectual climate of the nineteenth century. It serves as a vital tool for understanding the personal motivations behind the author's famous critiques of English culture.
