The Mies van der Rohe Archive

The Mies van der Rohe Archive was published by Garland Science in 1986 as a comprehensive multi-volume resource designed to preserve and disseminate the architectural legacy of Ludwig Mies van der Rohe. Compiled following the acquisition of the architect’s papers and drawings by the Museum of Modern Art in New York, the set serves as a primary scholarly foundation for understanding the development of modernist architecture. It was commissioned to organize decades of professional correspondence, project sketches, and technical blueprints into a structured, accessible format for historians and practitioners alike.

The editorial direction for this collection was guided by the need for rigorous academic documentation of Mies van der Rohe's progression from his early European work, such as the German Pavilion in Barcelona, to his later monumental skyscrapers in Chicago and New York. The design of the volumes emphasizes clarity and archival precision, mirroring the minimalist aesthetic of the architect himself. Upon release, it was received as an essential reference work, praised by architectural scholars for its depth in chronicling the shift toward the 'less is more' philosophy that defined mid-century structural design.
