The Messianic secret

Originally published in German in 1901 as Das Messiasgeheimnis in den Evangelien, William Wrede’s seminal work emerged during the height of the Liberal Protestant quest for the historical Jesus. Wrede challenged the prevailing consensus that the Gospel of Mark offered a straightforward, chronological account of Jesus’s life, arguing instead that the 'messianic secret'—Jesus commanding his disciples to remain silent about his identity—was a literary device constructed by the early Church to explain why Jesus was not recognized as the Messiah during his lifetime.

The 1971 J. Clarke edition represents a critical English-language republication that brought Wrede’s radical methodology to a new generation of scholars. Wrede’s approach, which prioritized the theological motives of the evangelist over the historical reliability of the narrative, became a cornerstone of form criticism. His work remains a polarizing but essential text, credited with shifting the trajectory of New Testament studies by forcing readers to confront the gap between the historical figure of Jesus and the post-resurrection faith of the early Christian communities.
