The Santa Klaus Murder

The Santa Klaus Murder was originally published in 1936 by Mavis Doriel Hay, representing a quintessential example of the Golden Age of detective fiction. Set in a remote English manor during the Christmas season, the narrative follows a traditional country-house mystery structure, subverting common tropes of the era while delivering a classic whodunit plot centered on the sudden death of the family patriarch during a festive gathering.

Mavis Doriel Hay wrote only three mystery novels in the mid-1930s before moving on to other literary pursuits, leading her work to fall into relative obscurity for several decades. The 2013 ReadHowYouWant edition is part of a broader modern revival of classic British crime fiction, which has seen renewed interest from readers seeking the atmospheric, puzzle-oriented storytelling characteristic of interwar detective novels. These reprints are frequently praised for preserving the clever, understated social observations that define Hay’s style.
