The school for scandal, 1780

The School for Scandal first premiered at the Drury Lane Theatre in 1777, emerging as a definitive work of the late eighteenth-century comedy of manners. Written by Richard Brinsley Sheridan, the play was a sophisticated critique of the gossip-driven social circles of London high society. Its immediate success solidified Sheridan's reputation as a master of wit and satire, providing a sharp, layered narrative that exposed the hypocrisy lurking beneath polite conversation.

This specific edition, printed and sold by Prichard & Hall in 1778, reflects the intense contemporary demand for Sheridan's work as it circulated through the literary culture of the time. The publication captures the linguistic precision and character-driven humor that defined the play’s design, which relied on rapid-fire dialogue and intricate plot reveals. It remains a foundational text in the history of British drama, studied for its enduring influence on the comedic form.
