The Way of the Clay; A Brief Outline Course in Clay Modeling with Illustrated Designs

The Way of the Clay was originally published in the late 19th century by the Milton Bradley Company, a firm deeply embedded in the American kindergarten movement. The book was designed as a practical instructional guide for teachers and students, reflecting the era's educational emphasis on tactile learning and the development of motor skills through manual training. It served as a pedagogical tool to integrate artistic expression into the classroom environment.

The design of the manual highlights the company’s commitment to Froebelian principles, which prioritized structured engagement with physical materials. By providing illustrated designs and simplified techniques, the authors aimed to democratize access to clay modeling, making it an accessible subject for educators with varying levels of artistic background. Its continued availability through modern reprints like the 2018 Franklin Classics edition underscores its enduring status as a historical document of early educational methodologies.
