Thomas Merton in Alaska

Thomas Merton in Alaska documents the final journey of the Trappist monk and contemplative writer shortly before his accidental death in 1968. Compiled from the journals he kept while traveling through Alaska and the West Coast, the work offers a poignant, introspective look at his interactions with the wilderness and his continued quest for spiritual solitude. It serves as a testament to his evolution as a writer, capturing the contemplative stillness he sought while engaging with the natural landscapes of the Pacific Northwest.

Published by New Directions, the text maintains the publisher's long-standing commitment to preserving Merton's literary estate. The design reflects the sparse, minimalist aesthetic often associated with mid-century contemplative literature, favoring clarity and accessibility to ensure the focus remains on the immediacy of his journal entries. Upon its release in 1989, the collection was received by scholars and admirers as a vital piece of the Merton canon, providing necessary context for his final thoughts and the themes of transcendence that defined his late career.
