Tiryns

Tiryns: The Prehistoric Palace of the Kings of Tiryns was first published in 1885, chronicling Heinrich Schliemann’s excavations at the site of Tiryns in the Argolid, Greece. Following his controversial but highly publicized work at Mycenae and Troy, Schliemann sought to uncover the architectural roots of the Mycenaean civilization. This volume represented a significant collaborative effort, as Schliemann invited the young architect Wilhelm Dörpfeld to assist him. Dörpfeld's systematic approach to the ruins provided a level of technical precision and structural analysis that had been largely absent from Schliemann's earlier, more impulsive archaeological ventures.

The book is notable for its extensive use of detailed plans, cross-sections, and colorful lithographic plates that brought the palace's layout to life for a Victorian audience. While Schliemann's interpretations were often colored by his desire to find Homeric parallels, the work remains a foundational text in Aegean archaeology. It was received by the scholarly community as a major advancement in the documentation of Bronze Age domestic architecture, helping to shift the focus of the field toward the rigorous study of structural remains and material culture rather than purely legendary associations.
