Troja

Heinrich Schliemann published Troja in 1884 as a definitive follow-up to his earlier work, Ilios. This volume was written to document his continued excavations at the mound of Hisarlik in Asia Minor, which he famously identified as the site of Homeric Troy. The work was prompted by his collaboration with the architect Wilhelm Dörpfeld, whose meticulous stratigraphic analysis forced Schliemann to revise his previous chronological assertions and acknowledge that the layers of the site were far more complex than his initial, more impulsive interpretations had suggested.

The book serves as a cornerstone of late nineteenth-century archaeological literature, reflecting the transition of the field from romantic treasure-hunting toward more rigorous empirical recording. While the layout and design reflect the dense, scholarly traditions of the Victorian era, the text is heavily illustrated with detailed site plans, sections, and renderings of artifacts uncovered during the excavations. Upon its release, it was received with significant professional scrutiny, as scholars weighed Schliemann’s genuine passion for the Homeric epics against his controversial excavation techniques and often speculative conclusions.
