Verwandtschaft, Name und Soziale Ordnung (300-1000)

Published in 2014 by de Gruyter, this scholarly monograph by historian Steffen Patzold explores the intricate intersections of kinship, nomenclature, and social stratification during the early Middle Ages. The work emerged from the academic discourse surrounding Carolingian social structures, specifically addressing how the naming conventions of the period served as indicators of familial ties and power dynamics between the 4th and 10th centuries.

Patzold, a recognized authority on the Carolingian era, designed the volume as a rigorous analysis of historical source materials. By synthesizing contemporary codicological evidence and social theory, the book sought to refine the prevailing understanding of how elite identity was constructed in pre-modern Europe. The text was well-received within medievalist circles for its methodological depth and its contribution to the ongoing re-evaluation of post-Roman social organization.
