Where it came from
Published in 2022 by Meta4Books vzw, this monograph serves as a definitive survey of the work of Werner Mantz, a German-Dutch photographer renowned for his contributions to the New Objectivity movement. Mantz gained international acclaim during the 1920s and 1930s for his stark, precise architectural photography and intimate portraits, which rejected romanticized pictorialism in favor of clarity and technical rigor. The book acts as a retrospective, documenting his transition from the industrial landscapes of the Rhineland to the modernist housing estates of Cologne and his later career in the Netherlands.
The editorial vision behind this collection focuses on presenting Mantz’s archival negatives with modern printing standards to highlight his mastery of light and structural composition. By centering the work within its original socio-political context—specifically the Weimar Republic's search for order and rationality—the volume allows contemporary audiences to appreciate the precise, unembellished perspective that defined his legacy. It was met with positive critical reception for its scholarly contribution to 20th-century photographic history and its faithful reproduction of his original gelatin silver prints.
