Provenance

Where it came from

Published in 1982 by Das Museum, this collection archives the seminal work of Werner Mantz during his formative years in Cologne. Mantz was a pivotal figure in the New Objectivity movement, and these images capture the rapid urban development and functionalist architecture of Weimar-era Germany. The volume was curated to preserve his precise, cool-toned aesthetic which defined the visual language of 1920s modernist housing projects.

The book serves as both a historical record and a tribute to Mantz’s technical mastery of light and shadow. His approach was characterized by a distinct lack of ornamentation, favoring structural clarity and social purpose. Upon its release in the early 1980s, the publication was well-received by architectural historians and photography scholars as a definitive resource for understanding the aesthetic priorities of interwar European architecture.
