Witch Hunt (Jack Harvey Novel) (A Jack Harvey Novel)

Witch Hunt was published in 1993 under the pseudonym Jack Harvey, a name Ian Rankin adopted to distinguish his standalone thrillers from his burgeoning Inspector Rebus series. During this period of his career, Rankin was experimenting with different narrative structures and pacing, seeking to establish a foothold in the competitive British crime and suspense market before the global success of his Edinburgh-based detective novels.

The book serves as a reflection of the hard-boiled thriller tropes popular in the early 1990s, characterized by its sharp dialogue and suspenseful plot. While Rankin eventually gained international acclaim for his Rebus series, the Jack Harvey titles—including Witch Hunt, Bleeding Hearts, and Blood Hunt—are viewed by literary critics as essential pieces of the author’s early development, demonstrating his transition toward the complex character-driven narratives that would later define his writing.
