Wm. Elliott & Sons seedsmen

The 1892 catalog issued by Wm. Elliott & Sons represents the height of the Victorian-era seed trade, a period when American nurseries transitioned from regional operations to sophisticated mail-order businesses. Published in New York, the catalog served as both a functional price list and a marketing tool for home gardeners, offering an expansive selection of heirloom vegetables, ornamental flowers, and specialized agricultural implements tailored to the changing landscape of late 19th-century suburban horticulture.

The design of these catalogs typically utilized chromolithography to showcase vibrant botanical illustrations, which were intended to inspire confidence in the quality of the seeds being offered. The firm of Wm. Elliott & Sons relied on these detailed visuals to compete in a crowded marketplace, positioning their brand as a reliable authority for both amateur gardeners and professional growers. These catalogs are now viewed by historians as essential records of the dietary habits and garden aesthetics of the Gilded Age.
