Where it came from
Published in 2010 by Wienand Verlag, this monograph serves as a comprehensive overview of the work of Wolfgang Mattheuer, one of the most significant representatives of the Leipzig School of painting. The volume was produced to document his lifelong engagement with German history and social observation, capturing the transition of his artistic vision from the GDR era into the reunified period. It acts as an essential retrospective for scholars and art enthusiasts aiming to contextualize his complex, often allegorical style within the broader movements of 20th-century Central European art.
The book features critical essays and high-quality reproductions that highlight Mattheuer’s unique ability to blend surrealism with stark, representational landscapes. Designed with a focus on archival clarity, the publication reflects his aesthetic preoccupation with the dichotomy between human ambition and inevitable disillusionment. Upon its release, it was received as a definitive resource for understanding his sculptural and painterly contributions, solidifying his legacy in German post-war art history.
