Wolfgang Mattheuer, paintings 1971-1988

Published in 1990 by Fischer Fine Art, this catalogue serves as a comprehensive record of the work of Wolfgang Mattheuer, one of the most significant painters associated with the Leipzig School in the former German Democratic Republic. The volume focuses on the artist's output during a tumultuous period of East German history, capturing the transition from the state-sanctioned Socialist Realism toward a more introspective and often allegorical mode of expression that characterized Mattheuer’s mature style.

Mattheuer was renowned for his philosophical and often bleak landscapes that functioned as critiques of systemic confinement and the human condition. The curation of this volume reflects the efforts of Fischer Fine Art to introduce his uniquely haunting visual language—defined by iconic figures like his 'Sisyphus' and 'The Centaur'—to a broader Western audience following the fall of the Berlin Wall. His work was highly regarded for its technical mastery and its ability to maintain artistic integrity under the complex socio-political pressures of the GDR.
