Where it came from
Published in 2022 by Hatje Cantz, this volume serves as a critical companion to an exhibition featuring the works of German painter Wolfgang Mattheuer and Canadian artist Stan Douglas. The book explores the thematic intersections between Mattheuer’s surreal, landscape-heavy critiques of East German life and the filmic, historical reconstructions characteristic of Douglas’s practice. By placing these two figures in dialogue, the publication examines the complexities of political memory and the representation of history across different generations and artistic mediums.
The design of the monograph reflects the minimalist, rigorous aesthetic associated with Hatje Cantz’s art catalogues, prioritizing high-fidelity reproductions of the featured works to allow the reader to engage with the technical precision of both artists. It was curated to address how these artists utilize space and time to comment on sociopolitical shifts, specifically focusing on the legacy of the GDR. The book has been well-received by scholars of contemporary art for its focused approach to cross-generational comparative studies.
