Where it came from
This publication serves as the comprehensive exhibition catalog for the 2007 show Wolfgang von Kempelen: Mensch-in-der-Maschine, hosted by the ZKM (Zentrum für Kunst und Medientechnologie) in Karlsruhe. It was compiled to document the life and complex intellectual contributions of Wolfgang von Kempelen, the 18th-century inventor most famously known for the Mechanical Turk, a fraudulent chess-playing automaton that captivated European nobility and intellectuals.
The catalog was curated to explore the intersection of early mechanical engineering and the philosophical implications of artificial intelligence. Through a collaborative effort of researchers and historians, the volume examines Kempelen’s broader career, including his pioneering work in speech synthesis and his influence on the evolution of robotics. By contextualizing these 18th-century feats within the digital age, the curators provided a scholarly look at the blurred lines between human creativity and technological automation.
