Published in 1984 by Avenel Books, an imprint of Crown Publishing Group, this omnibus volume was designed to capitalize on the enduring popularity of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's Sherlock Holmes canon. During the 1980s, Avenel frequently released affordable, comprehensive hardbound collections of classic literature targeted at general readers and home libraries. This specific edition compiled the seminal novels and short story collections into a single tome, offering a accessible way for modern readers to engage with the complete narrative arc of the world's most famous detective.

The design of this Avenel edition reflects the aesthetic sensibilities of mass-market publishing in the mid-1980s, prioritizing durability and a traditional, slightly academic presentation. By bundling multiple volumes into one, the publisher aimed to present a definitive, convenient resource for fans of the Victorian mystery genre. While these editions were not intended as collector's items in the artisanal sense, they were widely distributed and helped maintain the cultural ubiquity of the Holmes stories for a new generation of readers.
