Wotakoi

Wotakoi: Love Is Hard for Otaku, originally titled Wotaku ni Koi wa Muzukashii, began as a webcomic series published on Pixiv in 2014 by the artist known as Fujita. The narrative follows the complicated romantic lives of office workers who hide their otaku interests, blending workplace comedy with tropes common to anime and gaming subcultures. Its transition into a print series published by Ichijinsha and later translated by Kodansha reflects the growing mainstream visibility of otaku culture in contemporary Japan.

Fujita’s approach to the series emphasizes relatable character dynamics over traditional romantic melodrama, focusing on the intersection of professional life and private passions. The design and character work are noted for their clean, expressive aesthetic, which helped the series gain widespread popularity. Upon its release, it was well-received by audiences for its humorous take on adult hobbies and earned a dedicated following that eventually led to an anime adaptation and a live-action film.
