Yesterday's Tomorrows

Yesterday's Tomorrows was published in 1982 by Berkley, serving as a significant collection of vintage science fiction art and commentary. The book functions as a retrospective, curating illustrations from the golden age of pulp science fiction magazines to analyze how mid-century society envisioned the future. Frederik Pohl, a titan of the science fiction genre, utilized his deep industry expertise to provide critical context for these works, exploring the disconnect between the optimistic, often outlandish technological predictions of the past and the realities that followed.

The book is celebrated for its preservation of classic cover art and internal illustrations that defined the genre's aesthetic throughout the mid-20th century. By juxtaposing these imaginative visual narratives with thoughtful editorial analysis, Pohl aimed to document a cultural phenomenon rather than simply present a gallery of kitsch. It was received as a respectful and nostalgic examination of speculative fiction's history, securing its place as a reliable touchstone for collectors of science fiction ephemera and art history.
