Zen no shisō to kenjutsu

Zen no shisō to kenjutsu, authored by Rentarō Satō and published in 2008 by the Nihon Budōkan, serves as a scholarly exploration of the intersection between Zen philosophy and traditional Japanese swordsmanship. Commissioned by the Nihon Budōkan, the preeminent institution for the promotion of Budo in Japan, the text is designed to bridge the gap between meditative practice and the technical application of the sword. It is intended for serious practitioners looking to understand the metaphysical foundations that have historically informed Japanese martial arts.

The design and content of the book reflect a disciplined, academic approach consistent with the Nihon Budōkan's mission to preserve the integrity of classical martial disciplines. By analyzing historical perspectives and philosophical treatises, Satō provides a bridge between ancient teachings and modern physical training. While it remains a niche publication within the context of martial arts literature, it is regarded by practitioners of Kendo and other sword arts as a grounded reference for the deeper, non-physical aspects of their craft.
