Where it came from
The 12 Valsas de Esquina represent a cornerstone of Brazilian modernism, composed by Francisco Mignone between 1938 and 1943. These pieces were written as a direct homage to the street-corner waltzes of Rio de Janeiro, reflecting Mignone's intention to elevate popular urban musical idioms—specifically the 'chorões' style—into the realm of serious concert repertoire. By blending sentimental, nostalgic melodies with complex harmonic structures, Mignone captured the nocturnal, melancholic essence of mid-century Brazilian life.
This specific 2005 release on the ALM Records label serves as a vital scholarly document of the composer's legacy, featuring performances by Maria Josephina Mignone, the composer’s widow and a foremost interpreter of his piano works, alongside Miriam Ramos. The album was produced to preserve the authentic rhythmic nuance and phrasing dictated by the composer himself. It has been received by musicologists and pianists alike as a definitive reference for the technical execution and emotional depth required to perform Mignone's piano cycle accurately.
