Where it came from
Released in 2012 on the independent label Jam Rat Records, 3 Steps From La La represents a contemporary entry in the zydeco genre. The album was produced as part of the label's mission to capture the high-energy, accordion-led sounds traditional to the Louisiana dance hall circuit, specifically grounding Ernest James's performance in the rhythmic, driving percussion characteristic of the style.
The album's design and track selection reflect a commitment to the roots of the genre, prioritizing an authentic, live-recording feel over overproduced studio techniques. It serves as a distillation of James's touring repertoire from that era, receiving modest but respectful attention within the regional roots music community for its preservation of classic zydeco structures and instrumentation.
