Where it came from
Released in 2016 under the independent label Sphinxter Records, A Blessing and a Curse serves as a representative entry in the discography of Here Come the Mummies, an anonymous funk collective known for their elaborate mummy costumes and mysterious backstories. The album continues the group's signature blend of high-energy instrumental arrangements and R&B-infused funk, maintaining the theatrical, tongue-in-cheek persona that has defined the ensemble since their inception in the early 2000s.
The band maintains a strict policy of anonymity, which extends to the production and visual direction of their albums. While the specific personnel behind the instrumentation remain shrouded in their stage personas, the design of this record reflects the group's commitment to a cohesive, tongue-in-cheek horror aesthetic that ties their physical performances to their recorded output. It was received by their dedicated fanbase as a reliable continuation of the band's tight, brass-heavy sound and relentless touring energy.
