A Curse and a Sigh

A Curse and a Sigh, released in 2005 on the Dutch label Blue Jack Jazz Records, represents a collaborative effort between guitarist Maarten van der Grinten and saxophonist Benjamin Herman. The album emerged from the fertile jazz scene in the Netherlands, where both musicians had established themselves as versatile and technically adept performers. It was produced as a vehicle for the quartet to explore a blend of original compositions and nuanced interpretations, favoring a clean, acoustic sound that reflects the European jazz aesthetic of the mid-2000s.

The album is noted for its understated production and the tight, telepathic interplay between the quartet members. Rather than seeking commercial spectacle, the design and musical direction focus on intimacy and technical precision. Upon its release, it was received as a solid addition to the contemporary bop-influenced catalog, earning appreciation among European jazz critics for its sophisticated arrangements and the seamless integration of van der Grinten’s melodic guitar work with Herman’s expressive, hard-bop-inflected saxophone style.
