Provenance

Where it came from

Released in 2025 by Intrada, this collection presents the original motion picture scores for two iconic comedies: Abbott and Costello Meet Frankenstein and Abbott and Costello Meet the Keystone Cops. These films were central to the duo's mid-century dominance, with the former, released in 1948, serving as a landmark genre mashup that successfully blended Universal's horror legacy with the comedic timing of Bud Abbott and Lou Costello. The music provided the essential contrast required to ground the slapstick antics within the established, moody atmospheres of classic cinema.

The restoration of these scores features the Royal Scottish National Orchestra under the direction of William Stromberg, honoring the original compositions by Frank Skinner, William Lava, Herman Stein, and a young Henry Mancini. The project reflects a meticulous effort to preserve the orchestral heritage of the Universal musical archive. By re-recording and assembling these cues, the label aimed to provide a definitive high-fidelity listening experience for film music historians and fans of the golden age of Hollywood scoring techniques.
