Alexandre Goldenweiser (Volume I): Neuf Mazurkas / Piano Trio; Barcarolle / Sonate N°2

This release is part of a significant archival project by the French label Dante, which focused on restoring and reissuing historical recordings by Russian pianist and pedagogue Alexander Goldenweiser. Issued in 1998, the disc serves as a vital document of the Moscow Conservatory tradition, capturing Goldenweiser’s interpretations of works by Chopin, Rachmaninoff, and Catoire. The recordings are derived from Soviet-era masters that were often difficult for Western audiences to access, providing a rare glimpse into the playing style of a musician who was a contemporary and close friend of Rachmaninoff.

The curation of this volume reflects a broader mission to preserve the legacy of early 20th-century Russian pianism through careful digital remastering. By pairing his own compositions and those of his contemporaries with core romantic repertoire, the production highlights Goldenweiser's technical precision and structural clarity. While the Dante label operated primarily as a boutique historical reissue house, this release was well-received by specialized critics and piano enthusiasts for its role in illuminating the pedagogical lineage that would eventually influence many world-renowned Soviet pianists.
