Provenance

Where it came from

Released in 1989 by MCA Impulse!, this compilation serves as a retrospective of the vocal prowess of Lorez Alexandria, a jazz singer known for her sophisticated phrasing and technical control. The record gathers material primarily from her mid-1960s sessions with the Impulse! label, a period that showcased her transition toward a more refined, polished jazz aesthetic that balanced mainstream accessibility with complex, blues-inflected delivery.

The curation of this release reflects the label's effort to preserve the legacy of artists who were highly respected by jazz critics and peers but often overlooked by the broader pop-charting audience. By pairing 'Alexandria the Great' with supplementary tracks, the collection highlights the work of producers and arrangers who framed her voice within lush, post-bop orchestral settings, intended to emphasize her capacity for both deep emotional resonance and intricate vocal improvisation.
