Aux Grandes Orgues De Saint-Eustache Et De La Matthias-Kirche De Berlin - Improvisations 2 Sinfonietta

Released by Philips Classics in 1996, this recording highlights the exceptional improvisational mastery of organist and composer Jean Guillou. The album showcases his command over two distinct instruments: the Grand Organ of the Church of Saint-Eustache in Paris, an instrument Guillou himself played a significant role in reimagining, and the organ at the St. Matthias-Kirche in Berlin. The project serves as a testament to Guillou's philosophy of the organ as a symphonic medium, capable of a vast range of color and dramatic expression beyond traditional liturgical bounds.

Guillou was celebrated for his radical approach to organ performance and composition, often favoring bold, idiosyncratic interpretations that pushed the technical limits of the instruments. As a protégé of Marcel Dupré and a long-time titular organist at Saint-Eustache, he sought to move the organ repertoire into contemporary soundscapes. This collection captures his improvisational style, which was highly regarded by critics for its structural ingenuity and virtuosic energy, cementing his status as one of the most influential and provocative organists of the 20th century.
