Ballett-Suiten: Dornröschen • Der Nußknacker (The Sleeping Beauty • The Nutcracker / La Belle Au Bois Dormant • Casse-Noisette) Capriccio Italien

This recording of Tchaikovsky’s ballet suites, performed by the Berliner Philharmoniker under the baton of Mstislav Rostropovich, was released by Deutsche Grammophon during the late 1970s. It represents a significant intersection of Russian musical heritage and the German orchestral tradition, capturing a period when Rostropovich—renowned primarily as a virtuoso cellist—was cementing his reputation as a formidable symphonic conductor.

The production reflects the high-fidelity standards of Deutsche Grammophon's 'Gold' era, emphasizing the rich, lush textures of Tchaikovsky’s orchestration. The choice to pair the suites from The Sleeping Beauty and The Nutcracker with the Capriccio Italien highlights the composer's mastery of both delicate fairy-tale narratives and vibrant, travel-inspired tone poems. Upon release, the set was praised for its emotional intensity and the precision of the Berlin ensemble, remaining a staple for collectors interested in mid-20th-century Russian orchestral interpretation.
