Where it came from
This collection brings together seminal works for violin and orchestra by French and Spanish composers, recorded by Itzhak Perlman with the New York Philharmonic under the baton of Zubin Mehta. Released by Deutsche Grammophon, the album serves as a definitive showcase of the virtuoso violin repertoire, spanning the romanticism of Saint-Saëns and Sarasate to the impressionistic complexities of Ravel’s Tzigane.
The recordings were produced during a period in the 1970s and 80s when the partnership between Perlman and Mehta was at its height, characterized by high-fidelity standards and technical precision. These pieces are staples of the concert repertoire, and this compilation is widely regarded by critics and listeners as a benchmark for interpretative clarity and technical command, capturing Perlman's signature warmth and rhythmic agility in iconic masterworks.
