Ballett-Suiten: Dornröschen · Schwanensee · Nußknacker = Sleeping Beauty · Swan Lake · Nutcracker

This 1996 Deutsche Grammophon release pairs Mstislav Rostropovich with the Berliner Philharmoniker to interpret selections from Tchaikovsky’s three most iconic ballets. As a renowned cellist and conductor, Rostropovich brought a deeply emotive, Russian-inflected Romanticism to these works, which were originally composed in the late 19th century and define the high-water mark of classical ballet music. The recording serves as a significant intersection between a legendary soloist turned maestro and a world-class orchestra.

Deutsche Grammophon, known for its high fidelity and consistent production standards, aimed to capture the breadth and color of Tchaikovsky’s orchestration through this specific collaboration. The release highlights the expressive, often sweeping dynamics that define Rostropovich’s interpretation of Russian repertoire. Upon its release, the set was noted for its rich, polished sound quality and the nuanced interplay between the conductor’s interpretative history and the Berliner Philharmoniker’s technical precision.
