Where it came from
Released in 2020 by the German label GENUIN, this recording features the bassoonist Theo Plath in collaboration with the Deutsche Radio Philharmonie Saarbrücken Kaiserslautern, conducted by Leo McFall. The album functions as a showcase for the bassoon's versatility, moving from the classical grace of Weber and Crusell to the mid-20th-century technical complexities found in the concertos of Bitsch and Jolivet.
The album reflects a modern approach to the bassoon repertoire, prioritizing clarity and expressive nuance. By pairing the standard, virtuosic concertos of the 19th-century repertoire with the distinct, sharper harmonic language of the French school, the producers sought to demonstrate the instrument's full range of color. The release was well-received by classical music critics, who highlighted Plath’s technical precision and the sympathetic, balanced accompaniment provided by the orchestra.
