Where it came from
Released by Deutsche Grammophon in 2023, Beethoven and Beyond marks a significant milestone in the recording career of violinist María Dueñas. As a Deutsche Grammophon exclusive artist, Dueñas collaborated with the Wiener Symphoniker and conductor Manfred Honeck to produce an album that bridges the gap between traditional classical repertoire and contemporary musical voices. The project is designed to showcase the virtuosity and interpretative range of a rising soloist, positioning her within the historic lineage of the label’s esteemed violinists.
The album balances the structural rigor of Beethoven’s Violin Concerto with a selection of shorter, technically demanding works, including compositions by Kreisler, Saint-Saëns, and Spohr, as well as an original cadenza written by Dueñas herself. The design and artistic direction reflect a deliberate attempt to capture the fluidity between the classical era and later Romantic expressions, presenting a curated program that highlights both Dueñas's technical precision and the atmospheric, collaborative support of the Wiener Symphoniker. It was received by critics as a sophisticated debut that honors the standards of the German orchestral tradition while highlighting a distinct, modern individual voice.
