Where it came from
Released in 2021 on the ClicktiJazz label, Blues for Dos Gardenias represents a sophisticated exploration of the intersection between traditional Cuban son and modern jazz piano aesthetics. Raphaël Lemonnier, a pianist known for his dedication to the nuances of Latin American and Caribbean musical traditions, conceived this project as a contemporary homage to the golden era of Havana nightlife. The album emphasizes a stripped-back, intimate sound, stripping away heavy orchestral arrangements to focus on the interplay between piano, bass, and percussion, thereby allowing the melodic soul of the original compositions to breathe in a minimalist framework.
The design of the record reflects Lemonnier's commitment to artistic restraint, featuring clean, minimalist cover art that mirrors the atmospheric clarity of the music within. Critics have frequently noted the album's success in capturing a nostalgic, cinematic quality without relying on pastiche. By revitalizing classic motifs through a refined, contemporary jazz lens, the collection serves as a bridge between the historical legacy of mid-century Caribbean music and the improvisational spontaneity of the modern European jazz scene.
