Where it came from
Blues for Tony was released in 2009 by Moonjune Records, capturing a live performance from a 2007 tour. The album features the virtuoso quartet of guitarist Allan Holdsworth, keyboardist Alan Pasqua, bassist Jimmy Haslip, and drummer Chad Wackerman. The project was conceived as a tribute to their late friend and collaborator Tony Williams, the iconic jazz fusion drummer with whom the members had deep professional and personal ties, particularly through their work in the Tony Williams Lifetime group.
The album serves as a masterclass in modern jazz fusion, highlighting the complex improvisational chemistry between the four musicians. Recorded at The Baked Potato in Los Angeles and the Yoshi’s Jazz Club in Oakland, the production emphasizes raw, high-fidelity live sound that allows the technical proficiency of the performers to take center stage. Upon its release, it was met with significant critical acclaim within the jazz and guitar communities for its sophisticated arrangements and the seamless integration of technical virtuosity with melodic depth.
