Bulugwe Lami

Released in 2001 on the Globe Music label, Bulugwe Lami features The Cool Crooners of Bulawayo, a vocal harmony group that revitalized the sound of Zimbabwean township music. The group was formed by veteran musicians who had been active in the vibrant music scene of the 1950s and 60s, drawing heavily from the American jazz and swing influences that permeated Southern Africa during that era. By bringing together performers from influential mid-century acts like the City Quads and the Golden Rhythm Crooners, the project aimed to preserve and modernize the sophisticated vocal arrangements of the past.

The album serves as a masterclass in the marabi and kwela genres, characterized by tight, soulful three-part harmonies and rhythmic arrangements. The production sought to highlight the nostalgic elegance of the group’s historical context while capturing the crisp, refined quality of contemporary recording technology. Upon its release, the album was celebrated by critics as a poignant bridge between generations, helping to secure the group’s legacy as stewards of a significant musical heritage that had nearly faded from the public consciousness.
