Where it came from
The Carmen Suite was composed by Rodion Shchedrin in 1967 as a transcription of Georges Bizet's opera Carmen, originally conceived for his wife, the legendary ballerina Maya Plisetskaya. Shchedrin intended to distill the core themes of the opera into a vibrant, percussion-heavy orchestration for strings and percussion, moving away from a traditional operatic structure to create a standalone balletic experience that emphasized rhythmic intensity over vocal narrative.
This specific 1985 recording features the Moscow Virtuosi under the direction of violinist and conductor Vladimir Spivakov. Released on the Melodia-Eurodisc label during the final years of the Soviet era, the performance was celebrated for its technical precision and the ensemble's ability to navigate the complex, often angular arrangements of Shchedrin's score, further cementing the piece's status as a staple of contemporary Russian orchestral repertoire.
