Lore

Why it matters

Carmen McRae’s interpretation of this repertoire bridges the gap between vocal jazz and the complex compositions of a legendary pianist. By pairing her distinctive phrasing with these specific arrangements, this collection stands as a thoughtful study in how a vocalist can transform instrumental jazz standards into intimate, lyrical narratives.

Provenance

Where it came from

Released in 1988 and later reissued in 2013, Carmen Sings Monk represents a significant collaboration between jazz vocalist Carmen McRae and the music of pianist and composer Thelonious Monk. Recorded in the final years of McRae's career, the project involved her setting lyrics to Monk's famously complex, angular instrumental melodies, a task she undertook with the blessing of Monk's estate and long-time collaborators.

The album features arrangements by Clifford Jordan, who sought to maintain the harmonic integrity of Monk's originals while providing a spacious, supportive backdrop for McRae's precise vocal delivery. Upon its debut, the record was met with critical acclaim for its sophisticated interpretation of jazz standards, solidifying McRae's reputation as one of the most technically accomplished interpreters of the Great American Songbook.
