Carmen-Suite • L'Arlésienne - Suiten 1 & 2 - Opern-Intermezzi

Recorded in the early 1980s at the Philharmonie in Berlin, this release captures Herbert von Karajan leading the Berliner Philharmoniker in some of the most enduring orchestral works of the French repertoire. The recording came during a period of intense collaboration between Karajan and Deutsche Grammophon, aimed at utilizing advancing digital recording technology to capture the rich, lush textures of the Berlin ensemble. The selection focuses on Bizet's suites from his operas Carmen and L'Arlésienne, providing a showcase for the conductor's signature precision and sweeping, dramatic phrasing.

The album reflects the aesthetic standards of Deutsche Grammophon's 'Karajan Gold' era, characterized by a refined, balanced soundstage and high-fidelity production values. Karajan’s approach to these suites sought to emphasize the melodic elegance of the scores while maintaining the powerful rhythmic drive that defined his late-career work. Upon its release, the collection was praised for its technical clarity and remains a frequently cited reference recording, appreciated by listeners for both its evocative interpretation and the technical excellence of the performances.
