Carmen-Suite 1 • L'Arlésienne-Suiten 1 & 2

This 2017 Deutsche Grammophon release compiles iconic orchestral suites by Georges Bizet, specifically the first Carmen-Suite and both suites from L'Arlésienne. These recordings feature the Berliner Philharmoniker under the baton of Herbert von Karajan, capturing a definitive interpretation of these French romantic masterpieces. The performances reflect a mature phase of the conductor's long association with the orchestra, emphasizing the precise tonal color and structural elegance for which the ensemble is internationally renowned.

The packaging and remastering for this 2017 edition serve to preserve a legacy of high-fidelity recording that Deutsche Grammophon pioneered throughout the mid-to-late 20th century. Bizet’s music, originally composed for the stage, is presented here in its purely instrumental form, highlighting the vivid thematic characterization that made these suites staples of the concert repertoire. The release is widely regarded by critics as a classic reference point for orchestral transparency and dynamic range in the catalog of classical recordings.
