Where it came from
Originally released in 1976 on the Salsoul Records label, Christmas Jollies served as a quintessential example of the disco era's flair for high-production, orchestral arrangements. The Salsoul Orchestra, a rotating collective of session musicians led by Vince Montana Jr., was central to defining the Salsoul sound, which blended Philadelphia soul with Latin rhythms and prominent string sections. The album was conceived to capitalize on the label's immense popularity in dance clubs, offering a festive, uptempo alternative to traditional holiday music that could be played on the dance floor.
The 2012 Octave Lab release is a specialized reissue of this classic festive project, produced for listeners seeking high-fidelity representations of the original analog recordings. By this time, The Salsoul Orchestra had attained a cult status among dance music historians and vinyl enthusiasts for their intricate, lush orchestrations. This specific edition aims to preserve the artistic integrity of the 1970s master tapes, maintaining the vibrant, brass-heavy aesthetic that originally allowed the album to stand out during the peak of the disco movement.
