Where it came from
Franz Liszt composed his monumental oratorio Christus between 1862 and 1867, aiming to create a deeply personal and spiritual work that departed from the operatic style of his contemporaries. It reflects his late-life retreat into religious devotion, drawing on Latin liturgical texts and the Bible to depict the life of Christ through a series of grand, evocative scenes that demonstrate his mastery of leitmotif and symphonic development.
This 2010 release on the GLOR Classics label features a collaborative performance led by Joshard Daus with the Europachorakademie and the Jenaer Philharmonie. The recording is notable for the inclusion of commentary by Karl Kardinal Lehmann, which frames the work within its theological context. It was produced for listeners seeking a modern, high-fidelity interpretation of Liszt’s ambitious vision, emphasizing the meditative and choral textures that define this significant piece of 19th-century sacred music.
