Provenance

Where it came from

Released in 1998, this compilation was produced to commemorate the twentieth anniversary of Wolfgang Petry’s career in the German schlager music industry. At the time, Petry was experiencing a massive surge in popularity, having successfully pivoted to a more modern, rock-inflected sound that resonated with a broad audience beyond the traditional schlager demographic. The Gold Edition was curated as a comprehensive retrospective to encapsulate two decades of hits, serving both as a celebration of his longevity and as a testament to his status as one of Germany's most successful pop entertainers.

The album reflects the aesthetic of late-nineties commercial music packaging, prioritizing a celebratory tone and high-contrast visuals to signify the milestone. By releasing this through his own label imprint, Petry maintained significant creative control over the selection of tracks, ensuring the project felt like a personal statement to his fanbase. Upon release, it was well-received by his core audience, reinforcing his dominance in the German charts during a period where he was frequently selling out large-scale arenas.
