Dmitri Shostakovich, Marin Goleminov

This release features the Sofia String Quartet performing compositions by Dmitri Shostakovich and Marin Goleminov, issued by the Bulgarian label Gega New. Shostakovich, a seminal figure of the twentieth century, is represented here by his deeply introspective and technically demanding string quartets, which reflect the complex intersection of personal expression and political pressure under the Soviet regime.

Marin Goleminov was a central figure in Bulgarian classical music, often bridging the gap between national folk idioms and neoclassical structures. The inclusion of his work alongside Shostakovich serves to highlight the development of the string quartet medium within the Eastern European tradition. Gega New, known for its commitment to documenting Bulgarian musical heritage, produced this recording to offer listeners a nuanced look at the regional aesthetic evolution of chamber music throughout the latter half of the century.
