Where it came from
Released in 2006 on the EMI Classics label, this project serves as a reflective retrospective on the career of German soprano Edda Moser. The disc combines a curated selection of Mozart arias—highlighting Moser's technical command and interpretive depth—with a long-form interview conducted by music journalist Holger Wemhoff. The release was intended to provide context to Moser's legacy, particularly her definitive performances of works like the Queen of the Night, while allowing the artist to discuss her philosophy on vocal production and the German operatic tradition.
The production reflects a trend in the mid-2000s where major classical labels sought to humanize legendary singers through spoken-word accompaniment. By pairing the historic vocal recordings with modern commentary, the producers aimed to capture the intellectual rigor behind Moser's performances. The disc was received by critics as a valuable archival resource, appreciated primarily by vocal scholars and established opera enthusiasts interested in the nuances of mid-to-late 20th-century performance practice.
