Where it came from
Released in 2009 by Granota Records, 'Een Compilatie Vanwege Zijn Stad' serves as a retrospective tribute to Wannes Van De Velde, the iconic singer-songwriter and poet from Antwerp. The compilation was curated to honor his lifelong devotion to his hometown, distilling his folk-infused repertoire which often utilized the Antwerp dialect to capture the spirit of the city’s working class and its social history.
The album reflects Van De Velde’s role as a cultural institution in Flanders, showcasing a body of work that began in the 1960s. The design and selection emphasize his authenticity as a troubadour who eschewed commercial trends in favor of traditional storytelling. Upon its release, the record was received as a essential archival document, reinforcing his legacy as a voice for the common citizen and a steadfast observer of urban life.
