Emerson, Lake & Powell

Released in 1986, this self-titled album represents the brief collaboration between Keith Emerson, Greg Lake, and drummer Cozy Powell. The project emerged after the dissolution of Emerson, Lake & Palmer, with Powell stepping into the role previously held by Carl Palmer. It remains the sole studio release from this specific iteration of the trio, serving as a transitional piece that sought to bridge the gap between the symphonic progressive rock roots of the 1970s and the more polished, synthesizer-heavy production trends of the mid-1980s.

The album's sound is characterized by Emerson's virtuosic keyboard work and Lake's distinct vocal style, though it faced a mixed reception upon release. Critics and fans of the original ELP were divided by the modernized production values, which leaned heavily into the drum-gated and expansive electronic textures common to the era. Despite this, the record is regarded by enthusiasts as a curiosity that highlights the technical ambition of three master musicians attempting to remain relevant in a rapidly changing commercial landscape.
