Where it came from
Released in 2017 on the Octave label, Emerson Plays Emerson serves as a posthumous retrospective of Keith Emerson's intimate compositional work. The project was curated to showcase a side of the keyboard virtuoso that differed from his bombastic, stadium-filling performances with Emerson, Lake & Palmer. It highlights his facility for intricate, classical-influenced piano miniatures, revealing his meticulous attention to melody and structure when stripped of the synthesizers and theatrical stage production that defined his professional career.
The collection draws from a variety of sources, including Emerson's solo projects and previously unreleased studio recordings. The design and track selection focus on capturing the artist's introspective voice, emphasizing the technical precision and harmonic depth he brought to the instrument. Upon its release, the album was received by fans and critics as an essential final testament to Emerson's versatility, providing a contemplative counterpoint to his legacy as a progressive rock pioneer.
